Livonian Order castle ruins

LivonnijasOrdenjaPilsdrupas
In the 13th century Livonian Order built a fortification with two watch towers on opposite corners of the square. In 15th century on the outside of the wall on its east side a residential area was built with a cellar and a gallery and the fortification became a castle. It served as a border fortification in the place where Livonian order’s and Kurland bishop’s territories met (the river Tebra served as the borderline: on the right side – bishopric, on the left – Livonian Order).

The watermill complex (18th – 19th century), stone bridge over Tebra (1907) with Manteifeļi family emblem on the handrails, beer brewery in Liepājas street, Aizputes castle manor house complex and historical wooden architecture buildings in the area between Jāņa, Katoļu and Atmodas streets from the end of the 19th century make up a unique town planning ensemble. The oldest two storey residential house built in the 16th century as the Dom tavern is found on Atmodas street 9, it was rebuilt in later years. It is especially interesting to inspect the building smaller elements – the doors, windows and balcony railings.

Synagogue

aizputes_sinagoga

After 1795, when the little country of Piltene and all of Kurland was added to Russia, there were few inhabitants in Aizpute, therefore the government ushered in Jews from Lithuania. Their count grew rapidly and, of course, they needed their own synagogue. The construction of the first synagogue started in the 19th century. Tragical events took place in 1941, when all Jews of Aizpute were gathered in the synagogue, with trucks they were transported in Kalvene direction and killed. There are reports that say that around 500 Jews were shot, the youngest one was only 8 months old, the oldest – 94 years. The building served as a synagogue until the end of Second World War. In 1950 the synagogue was joined into one building and nowadays it is the building of Aizputes cultural house.
